Eastern Romania

Exploring Dobrudja & the Black Sea Coast for Red-breasted Geese

On this tour we explore the crop-fields and lagoons of eastern Romania in search of what are often the world's largest flocks of Red-breasted Geese. Is there a more attractive goose? There are Red-breasted Geese here every winter but in some years virtually the entire world population of 60,000 plus overwinters along the Black Sea coast. We can expect to see flocks of hundreds, and probably thousands of these stunning birds moving between their feeding fields, favoured drinking sites and wetland roosts. Of course, there are other birds, too, including thousands of Greater White-fronted Geese, some herds of Whooper Swan and a whole range of raptors such as Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin and possibly Saker Falcon. Being so close to the Danube Delta we cannot afford to ignore it and so spend a few days crusing its backwaters in search of more wildfowl, grebes and Greater Spotted & White-tailed Eagles.
