Romania
Danube Delta and Dobrudja Tour
Red-breasted Geese Tour
Romania is a large country with some of the wildest forests and mountains in Europe in Transylvania and Europe's greatest wetland, the remarkable Danube Delta. Several visits are needed to do this country and it's birds justice. It is still a rather undeveloped country though roads, hotels etc are improving rapidly. Truth is, the bad press the country often gets in the "west" is misleading. Visiting birders rarely experience anything negative.
And the birds? Well, Transylvania has Wallcreepers, Ural and Tengmalm's Owls, a good range of raptors and all of Europe's woodpeckers, but this is a vast and often wild region (with Brown Bear, Wolf & Lynx) needing time and probably a guide to get the best from it. In the Danube Delta White and Dalmatian Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorants, Glossy Ibis and numerous herons abound from spring to autumn. To the south the Dobrugea Plain and the Black Sea coast is the home of 10s of 1000s of Red-breasted Geese and White-fronted Geese in winter and Booted Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Long-legged Buzzard, Paddyfield Warbler, Sombre Tit and Pied Wheatear amongst others from spring to summer: see Where to Watch Birds in Eastern Europe.
Bucharest is the gateway for most international flights, though charters land at the Black Sea resorts in summer and cities around the country can be reached on domestic flights from the capital. All in all, Romania is superb for a birding trip at any time of year. |
